Peak Adventures’ purpose is to kindle personal growth, leadership, and connections through experiences in the outdoors.
 

ASI’s Peak Adventures is an outdoor adventure program dedicated to getting Sac State Students outside. Peak Adventures provides guided outdoor trips, low cost gear rentals, full service bike repair at The Bike Shop, summer youth camps and team building at The Challenge Center.

SUMMARY: The Head Raft Guide is responsible for providing a positive and safe experience for rafting trip participants. The Head Raft Guide manages participant needs and group dynamic for their own raft of 3-7 people and are responsible for the safely, navigation, and risk management of their raft while also overseeing the operation of the trip as a whole. The Head Raft Guide is responsible for the oversight of any other Peak Adventures Raft Guides and strictly adhering to Peak Adventures policy. The Head Raft Guide is to provide exemplary customer service, oversee risk management decisions, ensures trip operational needs are met.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely perform job duties
  • Oversee 2 to 3 rafts and 8 to 24 participants.
  • Assess and make decisions about on and off water risk management as it pertains to managing their boat and the overall operations of the rafting activity, adhering to the standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure completed documentation for participants and other compliance reporting.
  • Supervise and manage participants and raft guides.
  • Operation of 14 ft paddle raft on the South Fork of the American River with 3 to 7 participants ranging from age 9 to adult.
  • Oversee group dynamics such as participant interactions within the group as well as interactions between participants and others outside the group to promote a positive experience for all.
  • Operation of 12 passenger van if the incumbent has Class C driver’s license. Perform safety inspection on assigned vehicle to be used. Notify supervisor of any vehicle deficiencies.
  • Connect, disconnect, and drive with a flatbed trailer
  • Follow all California State Rules and Regulations surrounding vehicle operation.
  • Load and unload of equipment and supplies.
  • Understand and adhere to requirements/restrictions for trip location.
  • The ability to read rapids and understanding of the river of operation
  • Understand basic know tying and river signal procedures
  • Ability to communicate at high volumes and maintain levels of confidence and safety
  • Manage first aid needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 units at Sacramento State; maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA overall (for Student Assistant incumbents)
  • Current CPR certification (Online certification not accepted)
  • Current First Aid certification (Online certification not accepted)
  • Completed Peak Adventures Head Guide Skills Checklist
  • Must attend and successfully complete Peak Adventures Guide School (or equivalent)
  • Must hold Swift Water Rescue Technician (or equivalent) certification
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • California Commercial driver’s license (Class C or higher) with a passenger endorsement and meet ASI driving requirements

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Wilderness First Aid or higher certification
  • Other outdoor adventure certifications
  • Raft guide experience over 2 years

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee must:

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds or 100 pounds assisted.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of conditions and be prepared for both heat and cold
  • Must be able to climb, kneel, squat, reach overhead
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces
  • Must be able to meet minimum physical requirements for individual activity
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of focus for long periods
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT (Choose one only)

  • Outdoors exposed to rain, heat and cold temperature for 12 hours a day
